Per ACT's published test pages, the current ACT has four multiple-choice tests — and the
Science and Writing tests are now optional add-ons that do not affect your Composite score.
Every multiple-choice section is scored on a 1–36 scale.
English — 50 questions · 35 minutes
Math — 45 questions · 50 minutes (a permitted calculator may be used)
Writing (optional add-on) — 1 prompt · 40 minutes, scored 2–12 on four domains
Composite score: the average of your English, Math and Reading scores, rounded to the nearest whole
number (fractions below one-half round down, one-half and above round up). Science and Writing are reported
separately and are not part of the Composite. The maximum Composite and the maximum section score are both 36.
Seat time: adding the four multiple-choice sections gives 165 minutes (2 h 45 min) including the
optional Science test; without Science the three required multiple-choice sections total 125 minutes (2 h 05 min).
The optional Writing test adds another 40 minutes.
