Writing Techniques & Rhetorical Devices

17 moves for essays and literary analysis — the formula, a before-and-after
example, where it belongs in an essay, and what loses marks

How to use this page: each technique is a collapsible card — tap a title to open it, or jump from the list below. Every card gives you a formula you can copy, a before → after pair, when to use it, and the mistake that costs points. Two reference tables follow: ten sentence-level fixes and how to quote evidence. A short self-check at the end lets you test yourself. Everything here is written by hand for Windlume — no copyrighted material is reproduced.

The 17 techniques

Grouped roughly as architecture (1–5), rhetoric (6–12), and sentence craft (13–17). Learn the formula, then practise breaking it on purpose.

1 Thesis formula论点公式
What it doesStates one debatable claim that controls the whole essay and tells the reader what is at stake.
FormulaAlthough [opposing view or complication], [your claim] because [reason 1] and [reason 2].
Before → After✗ Social media has good and bad effects on teenagers.
✓ Although social media connects teenagers to distant friends, it erodes face-to-face empathy because it rewards performance over presence and crowds out unstructured conversation.
When to useThe last one or two sentences of your introduction. Optionally preview your two reasons so the body has a road map.
Watch outA thesis is not a fact, a question, or a topic announcement ("This essay will discuss…"). Keep it to one arguable claim — three claims in one sentence means none of them gets supported.
中文要点:论点必须可辩、单一、可被反驳。用 Although…, X because Y and Z 把「对立面 + 主张 + 理由」压进一到两句,放引言末尾;不要写成事实句、疑问句或「本文将讨论」。
2 Topic sentence主题句
What it doesAnnounces the single idea of a paragraph and ties it back to the thesis, so the reader knows what the paragraph is for.
Formula[Transition] + [paragraph claim] + [link to the thesis]
Before → After✗ Another problem is the fee. Many people cannot pay it. For example, one family …
✓ The fee is not merely expensive; it is regressive, because it takes the same flat amount from families whose incomes differ tenfold.
When to useThe first sentence of every body paragraph — before the evidence, never after it.
Watch outA fact ("The fee is $200") or a quotation is not a topic sentence: it cannot be argued with. The topic sentence must be a claim your evidence will then support.
中文要点:每段第一句要是「可辩的段落主张」,并回扣全文论点;事实句、引文都不能充当主题句(它们无法被反驳)。
3 Evidence + commentary (TEA)证据+分析
What it doesTurns a quotation or fact into an argument by explaining what it shows and how it shows it.
FormulaT (Topic) → E (Evidence: quote, data or example) → A (Analysis: "This shows … because …") — about one sentence of evidence to two or three sentences of commentary.
Before → After✗ The author uses a metaphor: "The city was a furnace." This is a metaphor.
✓ Calling the city "a furnace," the author makes heat an active agent: his neighbours are not merely warm but being smelted, which turns an ordinary summer into a moral trial.
When to useImmediately after every piece of evidence in a body paragraph. Never let a quotation be the last thing in a paragraph.
Watch outSummarising the quote in different words ("this means the city was hot") is not analysis. Commentary answers what it does and why it matters to the claim.
中文要点:引用只是起点。每条证据后要用两到三倍篇幅分析,回答「这说明了什么、怎么说明的、对论点有何用」——复述引文(改述字面意思)不算分析。
4 PEEL paragraphPEEL 段落结构
What it doesGives a reliable skeleton for a body paragraph so no part of the argument is missing.
FormulaPoint → Evidence → Explanation → Link (back to the thesis, or forward to the next point) — usually five to eight sentences.
Before → After✗ A paragraph that names three examples in a row, with no governing claim and no closing link.
✓ P claim → E one best example → E unpack that example → L "If the rule cannot survive this small case, it cannot survive the larger ones either."
When to useAny body paragraph you are unsure how to build, and as a diagnostic when a paragraph "feels wrong" — check which part is missing.
Watch outFour rigid PEELs in a row reads mechanical. Vary sentence length and make each Link advance the argument instead of repeating the point.
中文要点:P→E→E→L 是可靠的段落骨架,也是检查段落缺哪一块的清单。但四段一模一样会显得机械,收尾的 Link 要推进论证,别复读主题句。
5 Concession + refutation让步与反驳
What it doesShows you understand the other side — then defeats it. This earns credibility and makes your own claim look considered rather than assumed.
FormulaAdmittedly / Granted, [the strongest opposing point]. However, [your rebuttal] because [reason].
Before → After✗ Some people say homework is good, but I disagree.
✓ Granted, homework builds the study habits that exams reward. But when the same worksheet is assigned to thirty students, the habit it builds is compliance, not curiosity — and compliance is exactly what a schedule cannot measure.
When to useUsually one body paragraph, placed just before your strongest point — or folded into the conclusion as a final qualification.
Watch outDo not strawman the other side (pick its strongest version), and never spend more space on the concession than on your rebuttal.
中文要点:先诚实承认对方最强的论点,再给出理由反驳。别立稻草人(要挑对方最强版本),也别让让步篇幅超过反驳。
6 Rhetorical question反问
What it doesPulls the reader into the argument and frames the next sentence as something they already suspect.
Formula[A question the reader cannot answer favourably] + [an immediate claim or answer]
Before → After✗ Fines hurt poor families more than rich ones.
✓ When the fine falls hardest on the family with the least to spare, what lesson is the city teaching — and to whom?
When to useAs a hook, as a pivot into a body paragraph, or as the sentence just before your conclusion.
Watch outMore than one per paragraph turns an argument into a quiz. Never answer your own question with "The answer is obvious" — follow it with a real claim.
中文要点:反问用来把读者拉进来、给下一句铺垫。一段最多一个,连用会让文章像在提问而非论证;也不要用「答案很明显」自问自答。
7 Anaphora首语重复
What it doesRepeats the same opening words across successive clauses or sentences to build rhythm and pressure.
Formula[Same opening phrase] …, [Same opening phrase] …, [Same opening phrase] …
Before → After✗ The bridge was expensive, delayed, and harmful to the neighbourhood.
✓ The bridge cost us money. It cost us three years. It cost us the one block where our children played.
When to useAt an emotional peak: the end of the introduction, the end of a key body paragraph, or the conclusion.
Watch outThree repetitions is the classic number; beyond four it reads like padding. Keep the repeated words short and load-bearing.
中文要点:同一短语起头重复,制造节奏与气势,通常三下最稳。重复的短语要短、要有分量;超过四遍就像凑字数。
8 Antithesis对比/对立
What it doesSets two opposed ideas in parallel grammatical form so the contrast lands hard.
Formula[Clause A] , but / not [mirror-image Clause B] — the two halves must have the same grammatical shape.
Before → After✗ Journalism should tell the truth, not entertain people.
✓ Journalism is not the art of pleasing the audience; it is the discipline of telling it what it does not want to hear.
When to useIn the thesis sentence, in topic sentences, and in the conclusion where you want the argument to snap shut.
Watch outIf the two halves are not grammatically parallel, the sentence just looks clumsy — check that both sides are the same kind of phrase.
中文要点:用语法完全对称的一正一反两句制造张力。两边结构必须对齐,否则显得笨拙;适合论点句、主题句和结尾。
9 Chiasmus回环(ABBA)
What it doesReverses a structure (A-B becomes B-A) so the sentence closes on the idea it started from — it makes a claim feel inevitable.
FormulaA-B → B-A (swap the two key words) · e.g. It is not the paper that makes the promise; it is the promise that makes the paper.
Before → After✗ Freedom requires discipline, and discipline also leads to freedom.
✓ Discipline without freedom is tyranny; freedom without discipline is chaos.
When to useOnce — at the highest-stakes moment in the essay: the thesis, or the very last line.
Watch outIt is easy to write a chiasmus that sounds clever and says nothing. The reversal must sharpen the claim; if you use it three times, it becomes a tic.
中文要点:AB→BA 的回环结构,能让主张显得「必然成立」。全篇用一次(论点句或末句);若回环只是好听而没有推进意思,就变成文字游戏。
10 Parallelism平行结构
What it doesPuts lists and paired clauses in identical grammatical form, so the reader reads them as one idea rather than three.
FormulaX, Y, and Z — same part of speech, same tense, same construction
Before → After✗ She wanted to travel, meeting new people, and she hoped for adventure.
✓ She wanted to travel, to meet strangers, and to be changed by them.
When to useThesis road maps, lists of evidence, and conclusions. Also the default check whenever you write "and".
Watch outMixing gerunds and infinitives mid-list ("planning, booking, and to contact") is one of the most commonly scored errors. Convert every item to the same form.
中文要点:并列成分的语法形式必须一致(同为不定式/名词/分词)。混用(planning, booking, and to contact)是最常见的失分点,写「and」时顺手检查一遍。
11 Zeugma轭式搭配
What it doesOne verb or adjective governs two objects in different senses, for surprise and economy.
Formula[Verb] [literal object] and [figurative object]
Before → After✗ She took her bag, and she also accepted the blame for the mistake.
✓ She took her bag, the blame, and — quietly — the hint.
When to useSparingly, for wit: an essay hook, or a light final sentence. Rarely in a formal literary analysis.
Watch outIt reads as showing off and can be ambiguous. Never trade clarity for a joke, and never make the reader guess which sense you mean.
中文要点:一个动词统辖两个范畴不同的宾语,制造机智与简短。正式分析文里少用(像炫技、易生歧义),更适合开篇钩子或轻松的收尾句。
12 Metaphor / simile in analysis比喻的分析写法
What it doesExtends a figure of speech into a working explanation of the text rather than merely naming the device.
Formula[Quote the figure] + [Name it briefly] + [Press the comparison: what the vehicle emphasises or hides]
Before → After✗ The author uses a simile: "like a wounded animal." This shows the character is hurt.
✓ Comparing the character to "a wounded animal," the author strips him of language: he can only snarl and retreat, and the image makes his suffering physical and pre-verbal rather than something he could explain.
When to useIn literary-analysis body paragraphs, immediately after quoting the figure.
Watch outIdentifying the device is not analysis — you must say what the comparison does. Also keep the literal and figurative worlds apart; do not start arguing that "the shelf of memory needs dusting."
中文要点:指出「这是比喻」只是第一步,必须解释这个比喻强调了什么、掩盖了什么、对解读有何作用。别把喻体和本体两个世界混着说。
13 Sentence-length variety (loose vs periodic)长短句/松散句与掉尾句
What it doesControls pace and emphasis. A long sentence builds; a short one lands. Withholding the main clause (periodic) creates suspense; stating it first (loose) creates momentum.
FormulaLoose: [main clause], then details · Periodic: [details], [main clause last] · Pattern: [two or three long subordinated sentences] → [one very short sentence]
Before → After✗ The law was passed. It had a lot of effects. People were affected in different ways. Some were good and some were bad.
✓ The law was passed in April, after the hearings nobody watched, and it quietly changed which families could afford to stay; by summer, three had left the block. Nobody voted for that.
When to useAt the end of paragraphs, and above all in the essay's final line, where a short sentence after a long one carries the most weight.
Watch outChoppy all-short sentences read like a grade-schooler; a wall of long ones hides the hierarchy of your ideas. Do not just make sentences longer to "sound sophisticated".
中文要点:长句铺垫、短句落地,靠长短交替形成节奏并突出关键句。全短句幼稚、全长句淹没主次;加长句子不等于更高级。
14 Active voice & strong verbs主动语态与有力动词
What it doesPuts the actor at the front of the sentence and makes the action concrete, so the reader can see who did what.
Formula[Actor] + [strong verb] + [thing acted on] — replace "there was / is", "made a decision", "an analysis of" with one real verb.
Before → After✗ A decision was made by the administration that the program would be eliminated.
✓ The administration cancelled the program.
When to useThroughout your arguments. Keep the passive only when the actor is genuinely unknown — or when the text is hiding the actor, which you can then analyse.
Watch outActive alone is not enough: "The administration did an elimination of the program" is active and still weak. Kill nominalisations and use the verb hidden inside the noun.
中文要点:主动语态把施动者放到句首、动作变具体。但只求「主动」不够:要拆掉名词化(make a decision → decide,an analysis of → analyse);被动只在施动者未知或被刻意隐藏时保留。
15 Transition words连接词/逻辑关系
What it doesNames the exact logical relationship between two sentences, so the reader never has to guess how your ideas connect.
Formula[Sentence 1]. [Transition], [sentence 2] — contrast: however, nevertheless · cause: therefore, consequently · addition: moreover, furthermore · example: for instance · concession: admittedly
Before → After✗ The city built more roads. Traffic got worse. (relation unmarked)
✓ The city built more roads; consequently, traffic grew worse. (cause) — change it to "nevertheless" and you assert the opposite story.
When to useAt the seam between every pair of sentences, and as the first word of body paragraphs.
Watch outThe transition — not the facts — tells the reader which story you are telling. "However" where the logic is causal reverses your own argument; and stacking them ("However, moreover, therefore") says nothing.
中文要点:连接词标示的是逻辑关系,用错等于把论证说反(因果处写成 however 就是自相矛盾)。每条句缝、每段开头都要有;堆叠多个反而空洞。
16 Hook / opening strategies开篇钩子
What it doesBuys the reader's attention in the first sentence and gives the essay a reason to be read.
FormulaChoose one: surprising statistic · vivid scene · provocative claim · concession-as-hook · redefined definition · one-line anecdote — then a one-sentence bridge into the thesis.
Before → After✗ Since the beginning of time, humans have debated whether schools should spend money on security.
✓ Last year the district spent $40,000 on a fence that a fifteen-year-old climbed in eleven seconds. — then bridge to the thesis about what security spending actually buys.
When to useThe first sentence of the essay — and, in miniature, the first sentence of each body paragraph.
Watch outNo "since the beginning of time", no dictionary definition, and no rhetorical question you then abandon. The hook must connect to the thesis in the next sentence, not float free.
中文要点:用数据、场景、反常识断言开场,紧接着一句过渡把钩子接到论点。忌「自古以来」、词典定义、问了不管的反问。
17 Conclusion strategies (the "so what")结尾的「所以呢」
What it doesSays why the argument matters beyond the prompt — it widens the lens instead of repeating the body.
FormulaRestate the claim in new terms (no copy-paste) → widen the lens (implication, stake, next question) → land the last line · answer "So what?" by the second sentence.
Before → After✗ In conclusion, as I have shown, the fee is unfair for the reasons above.
✓ The fee is small, and that is the point: a price that looks trivial to the people who set it can decide, for everyone else, whether a child stays in the room.
When to useThe final paragraph — and the final line should not be a restatement of the thesis.
Watch outNo "In conclusion", no new evidence, no paragraph-by-paragraph recap, and never end on a vague hope such as "Only time will tell".
中文要点:结论要回答「所以呢」:换词重述主张,再把视角抬到更大的意义。不要引入新证据,忌「In conclusion」、逐段复述和「Only time will tell」式空泛展望。

Quick reference: quoting evidence in literary & rhetorical analysis

A quotation is not evidence until you have made it work. Use the three-step move quote → cite → unpack: give the exact words, say where they come from, then explain what they do and why it matters to your claim. One sentence of quotation should earn two or three sentences of unpacking.

1

Quote

Choose the shortest words that carry the meaning — usually three to eight words. Embed the quotation inside your own sentence rather than parking it alone, and quote exactly: "the sound of a watch", not a paraphrase in quotation marks.

2

Cite

Name the source so the reader can find it: the author in a signal phrase (Poe writes…) and a locator — (line 12), (para. 4), or the chapter. In a timed essay, a name plus a line number is enough.

3

Unpack

Two or three sentences on what the words do: which device, what it compares or withholds, what it implies — and why that matters to your claim. Never let a quotation end a paragraph.

Three model sentences

  1. Quote + unpack a simile. In The Tell-Tale Heart, Poe's narrator describes the sound he hears as "a dull, quick sound, such as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton," and the simile turns his own body into a machine he cannot switch off — the guilt he keeps denying is the very thing timing him.
  2. Quote + rhetorical device. When King repeats "I have a dream" across paragraph after paragraph, the anaphora does not merely decorate the speech; each repetition converts a private hope into a public demand, so that by the closing clause the audience has stopped listening to a speaker and started hearing itself.
  3. Quote + turn on one phrase. When the witches chant "fair is foul, and foul is fair," the chiasmus does the work of the whole opening act: it folds the world as it stands into the world it is about to become, so the audience has been warned before the first scene has finished.
Don't do this: "The author uses imagery to show how he feels. This is imagery." — naming a device and stopping is not analysis, and neither is paraphrasing the quotation back to the reader. If a sentence could be written without reading the passage, it is not evidence work.
